Trip Out West

Had a great trip out west the other day. Maj Robinson and I were picked to go recover an aircraft with some minor maintenance needed. They sent out the maintainers the day before and then we followed up the next day. Was interesting getting to fly all day in the BACK of the aircraft. I tried my best to help them load the pax and cargo, but mostly I just stayed out of the way and let the professionals do the work. The best part of the trip was crawling out on the back ramp and looking straight down from 12,000 feet.

So once we got to the FOB, one of the SSgt’s came and picked us up and brought us to the nicest place in the town. It was our own personal Shantee Shack with cots. 3 or 4 of the cots had mattresses that look like they had been out there since the beginning of the war. I felt safer just sleeping on a bare cot. We woke at first light and went to a staging area to wait for our ride outside the wire. We waited about an hour and the Up-armored 7 ton showed up to take us outside. Was a fun trip but a lot dustier than I’d thought it would be. Once outside, we took a quick look at the aircraft and were impressed at the work the maintainers accomplished. Overall, they did an awesome job and we quickly lifted and headed back to the pad. We made it safely back home and only had to spend one night away from our beloved home base. Great day, and I’m glad it all worked out.
